nmThe Cougar wrestlers had an impressive season, with an ending record of 13-4 in dual matches. The team placedsecond in sectionals and had a conference record of 3-2. North lost to Jennings County in the regionals, making their teamrecord 13-5. Three of the teams five dual meet losses were by three points or less. The Cougars also won their own Bo HenryClassic Tournament for the first time.One of the main goals of any athlete was to advance to the state finals in their sport. When involved in an individualsport it is possible to make it to that point even though the whole team may not. The ultimate goal for one Norths seniors wasachieved during the 2004 season. Heath VanDeventer won the state championship in the 189-pound weight class, capping aperfect year with a 48-0 record. He broke the county record for most career wins with 171. Of his success VanDeventer said,Ive been all around the first place spot at state, placing 2nd last year and 3rd the year before. Nobody wants it as bad as Ido! Heath also made the fastest pin in the state in his weight class with five seconds.The Cougar team was made up of four seniors: Taylour Burton, Irena Fuskova, Josh Keen, and Heath VanDeventer;seven juniors: Corey Draughn, Anthony Black, Zac Spaulding, Wayne Harden, Elliot Jordan, Wilson Stahly, ChrisWojciechowski; four sophomores: Daniel Carter, P.J. OHeran, Seth Teeters and Bryan Wathen; and eight freshmen: DustinBruce, Ben Clay, Filician Dickens, John Parker, Bobby Railing, Nick Teach, Dan Ooley, and David Anderson.The Cougars had a female wrestler cross the state lines this year. Senior Hannah Paarlberg wrestled at North forthree years before moving to California and winning the girls state championship in San Francisco. North had five wrestlersadvance to semi-state: sophomore Daniel Carter, juniors Wil Stahly, Anthony Black, Chris Wojciechowski, and senior HeathVandeventer. In addition, senior Josh Keen qualified for Academic All-State honorable mention.Wil Stahly and Chris Wojciechowski shared the Maroon Award and the Gold Award was given to Heath VanDeventer.Head coach Perry Summitt has fond memories of this years team.
