The teamwon five of their six meets, losing only to BloomingtonSouth in the city meet. The Cougars beat Edgewood,Brown County, Bedford North Lawrence, Columbus Eastand conference foe Martinsville. North ended the seasontied for fifth place in Conference Indiana.The team also participated in three invitationalcompetitions, placing highly at all of them. The team wonthe Bedford North Lawrence Invitational, racking up 156points. They also won the Seymour Invitational and tiedfor first at the Martinsville Invitational.In their run for the state meet, the Cougars startedout strong. During sectionals, they finished second as ateam to Bloomington South and advanced seventeenindividual athletes to the regional. There were manyoutstanding efforts at sectionals, including the setting of asectional record by sophomore RyanSmith in the 300 meter hurdles,which he ran in 39.69 seconds.Advancing to the state meet wereSmith in the 110 meter-high hurdlesand the 300-meter intermediatehurdles, sophomore John Hiestandin the 800-meter race, junior JoeBronnenberg in the pole vault, as wellas the 400-meter, 1,600-meter, and3,200-meter relay teams. Highlightsfrom the state meet included asecond place finish by Hiestand, aninth place finish by Smith in the 110-meter hurdles, and an eleventh placefinish by Bronnenberg.Post-season honors wereawarded to Smith, who received theGold Award for his exceptionalperformances, and John Hiestand,who received the Maroon Award formental attitude.126 |
