Kingdominated the match with Cox, who hadto lose 12 pounds in two days to makeweight, gassed out. At heavyweight,freshman Jason Cox lost 8-10 to SteveSmiley.Tournament play finally arrived andthe sectionals was the first step. Northwon its third straight sectional and qualified 11 wrestlers for the Regionals. TheCougars had five champions: Barker at105, Trotter at 112, Hacker at 126, Burton at 138, and Wile Wiley at 155.Wiley avenged an early season defeatto Gene Sherman of Edgewood with a 4-0decision. Burton also reversed a loss toEdgewoods Rob Ferguson, also winning4-0. Barker pinned Edgewoods DonCornwell in 3:07 for the 105 pound title,and Trotter defeated Edgewoods MikeHover, 12-1.Hacker won one of the featurematches of the day beating Souths RussBrummett, 11-9. They didnt meet in thedual meet becauseHacker was out withthe flu. The other feature match went toSouth as King got three near fall pointsin the final period to beat Cox, 9-5.Mooresville ran away with the regionalcrown with North coming in second.North sent six wrestlers to the semi-stateincluding two regional champions, Burton and Wiley. The runners-up were Trotter, Hacker, Dale Blubaugh, and Cox.Barker lost in the afternoon, 3-1, toeventual champion Greg Davidson ofMooresville. The loss was a big blow tothe Cougars, because Barker was third inthe state last year at 98 pounds. SouthsKing beat Cox for the third time, but thistime he had to come from behind in overtime to win, 3-1.Wiley, whose only loss was to Shermanearlier in the season handled the Mustang easily this time, winning 10-2 in thechampionship round.Mooresville won the Semi-State withSouth second, and North fourth. Northtook three Cougars to State but all threeas runnersup. Hacker, Burton, Wiley alllost title bouts. Burton lost to KeithSchnur of Mater Dei, 10-3, and Wiley lostto John Schroeder of Mater Dei, 4-1.Both Burton and Wiley had beaten theiropponents earlier in the year.On to the State meet for the Cougars.During the first session the Cougars lostHacker and Burton. Hacker lost to DarrellOakley from Michigan City, 9-4, and Burton lost to Kerry Mullen from WarrenCentral, 12-4. Wiley won the first roundmatch, beating Lowells Jim Rust, 12-0.Wiley went on to beat Matt Branning ofFort Wayne Elm Hurst to make it into thechampionship round. His opponent wasMater Deis John Schroeder who hadbeaten Wiley in the Semi-State. Afterthree, two-minute periods, Wiley won 6-1and became a 1978, 155-pound, StateChampion. The fifth champion in Northssix year existence.Cross-town rival Bloomington Southwent on to win the State Championshipbeating Warren Central by one point. ThePanthers had two State Champions, SamAckerman at 98 and Keith Saunders at119. North finished with a winning season of eleven wins and one loss.88 varsity wrestling |
