Description: When the Going Gets Tough the Tough Get Going.Cougars place 12th in state meet and bring home another champ.When the Cougar Wrestling seasonstarted up for the 1977-78 season, noone said it was going to be easy, the Cougars would not be wrestling with thesame team that won the 1977 State Title,or with last years two state champions,177 pounder Bob Krause and 185pounder Kelly Moran. However, Northdid have six returning lettermen to mixwith wrestlers from last years reserveteam to get the season rolling.Opening the season at Whiteland, theCougars won at all but two weights andwon seven of the last eight matches withpins while grabbing their first victory.Junior Joe Hacker, started Norths stringof pins with a second period fall of 1:32.Sophomore Dean Blubaugh (138), seniorLee Burton (145), sophomore Dale Blubaugh (155), junior Jay Wiley (167), junior Delbert Deckard (185), and seniorBob Cox (Hwt.) followed with pins too.Finishing the season at home, thedefending State Champions hostedcross-town rival Bloomington South. TheNorth reserves in the varsity wrestlingline-ups because of illness and injuries,lost. But they were a key in Norths 27-19victory. Junior Ed Jewert lost to seniorKeith Saunders at 119, but the unbeatenSaunders struggled to a 4-1 decision.Senior Scott Ridge lost to junior RussBrummett at 126, but it was by a 19-8decision rather than the pin that Brummett had been laying on opponents.Sophomore Dan Lulchuk gave unbeatensenior Trent Bower, at 145, a fightbefore losing 4-2.Sophomore Jeff Sims lost to Sam Ack-erman, 8-1, at 98; Paul Barker beat RobMorrow, 6-1, at 105; Chuck Trotter beatDave Walcoff, 5-0, at 112; Dean Blubaugh pinned Jeff Ellington in 1:59 at132; Lee Burton beat Larry Webb, 7-1, at138; Dale Blubaugh beat Dennis Sego, 5-0, at 155; and Jay Wiley pinned Rob Harlow in 2:53 at 167. Junior Rick Burks gotthe victory that put North out of rangewhen he scored a mild 7-5 upset overDave Haeberle at 177. Burks wrapped itup for us, Henry said. That was a nicewin. (continued on next page)Junior Jay Wiley gets ready to move on JohnSchroeder at Mater Dei during the state finals.Wiley won 6-1 to win the 155-pound class andbecame Norths fifth state champion.Senior Lee Burton had one of the wilder wrestlingmatches against Edgewood. Burton lost though inthe last seconds to Rob Ferguson, 12-11.In sectional competition, sophomore Dale Blubaugh pins Bedfords Ron Maze in 3:12 in the 145-pound weight class.
