HayfeverNoel Coward is considered one of the most talented playwrightsof the twentieth century. His plays are witty and fast-paced, over all achallenge for any actor. Of course it was no surprise that CowardsHayfeverwas a tremendous success as the Bloomington North 1998 fallplay.North alumni Jake Mechling was brought in to direct, and hisleadership helped the cast to pull off two stunning performances.Seniors Elisabeth Addleman, Clint Bobzien, Abby Mechling andBobby Simic play a dysfunctional British family, each of whom invitea guest for the weekend. The guests, played by seniors KatherineCallison and Nick Mills, junior Elicia Reed and sophomore Carl Estesare all romantically linked with one of the familymembers, but during the course of the play they all endup with someone else. Of course the clever and fastdialogue made for hilarious plot twists, and seniorRachel Hardy, in a cameo role as the family maid, stolethe show every time she came on stage.Right down to the British accents, every detailof this play was perfectly crafted. The audience seemedto agree: During the performances the laughter neverended.>ut Leonardo Di. keejthose post-rehearsal nights spu—Rachel H;Seniors Bobby Simic and AbbyMechling sulk as their mother,played by senior ElisabethAddleman informs them that shetoo will be inviting a guest downfor the weekend at their largecountry estate. Bobby and Abbyhave already taken theopportunity to invite their ownguests. The comic melee thatensues made the play a treat towatch. Of course the veryattractive legs of the familysmaid helped a bit as well.Seniors Elisabeth Addleman andNick Mills star in the fall production ofHayfever. Addleman played a formeractress and Mills played a muchyounger fan invited down for theweekend by the aging star. Of courseit was bit of a surprise to all when heended up with Elisabeths daughter,played by Abby Mechling. |
