Description: Music ProfilesKari GjerdingenWhen Kari attended Tri-North, she was in awe when she first heard theNorth Symphonic Band perform. Even as a senior today, she remembershow she believed they were the best thing I ever heard, and she knewshe wanted to be a part of that band someday. Not only did Kari becomea part of that amazing band, but she has been the first chair flute for threeyears, has played in the symphonic band for 4 years and Jazz band 1 for3 years. Recently Kari was honored with the John Phillip Sousa award forbeing the outstanding Symphonic musician. Regarding who has been aninfluence in her musical life, she explains my flute teachers gave me thenuts and bolts. Ms. Stockhouse taught me what music is supposed toconvey, the feeling of the music. Next year Kari will be studying with anexcellent teacher, Jaques Zoon, in Boston, who is the principle flute of theBoston Symphony Orchestra. Kari will be attending Welsley and will studyphysics.Kirk HamiltonKirk Hamilton is all saxed up. As a senior stand out inthe symphonic band and Jazz 1, Kirk has played the altosax, the tenor sax, the soprano sax, and the flute. Hefirst became interested inplaying sax when he heardJohn Coltrane play at the Village Vanguard in seventhgrade. As he became moreand more interested in prac-ticing and performing, people such as Ms.Stockhouse, David Baker,Dave Liebman and anyonewho ever clapped for himencouraged him to keep it upthrough high school and beyond. Kirk has attendedmany music camps andworkshops, and has received numerous music honors such as the BHSN LouisArmstrong Jazz award, the University of Miami CarstanceWeldon Scholarship, First tenor in the 1999 All -State JazzBand, and many more. All these experiences have leftfond memories in Kirks mind, and one which stands outwas when he played at the House of Blues in Beverly Hillsduring the Marching Bands trip to the Rose Parade. AfterKirk graduates, he plans to study jazz at the University ofMiami in Florida. After that, who knows? For sure he willgo far.Nina OnestiNina became interested in music at a veryyoung age when shebegan playing piano atfive years old. Whenshe was seven, she saidthe violin caught hereye, and she has beenplaying it ever since. Her violin teacher,Stacia Spencer and herharp teacher, Ela Szmythave continued to encourage Nina in playingharp, violin, viola, pianoand guitar to this day.Although she is unsure of what type of music memories she will create in the future, she has plentymemories to take with her from high school. Sheremembers Our orchestra trips would probably bethe most memorable. One word...baboon!
