Description: mmamThey Aint What They Used to BeCougars win HHC Championship, Seven Cougars and Nichols head HHCOn August 27, 1977, the Cougarswere ready to take on the first opponentfor the 1977 season, crosstown rivalBloomington South. South led at halftime7-0, but the Cougars came back in thesecond half ready to play. It was thirddown and 11 early in the fourth quarter,South still leading 7-0. The North coaching staff sent in a play. But Pat (Gladfelter) changed it, beamed Cougar coachNichols. We had another play called andhe changed it. The play was a draw tojunior Grant Gray. He slipped a tacklenear the line of scrimmage and thenshowed good moves and deceptivespeed as he made it all the way to theSouth eight-yard line before being tackled. Two plays later with 9:29 left in thegame, Gladfelter scored on a three-yardquarterback draw play. The game wastied 7-7 at the end of regulation time.North won the toss to start overtime playand elected to play defense. On Southsfirst play senior quarterback Mark Gallothrew an interception right at sophomoreJ. E. Hulls. North took over and Graysfield goal ended the contest, North winning 10-7.Next opponent on the list was Martinsville. Playing on the Cougars own homefield they lost the game 41-0. The mostpoints allowed ever by a Cougar team.North made virtually every conceivablemistake. The Cougars fumbled fourtimes and lost them twice, including thefirst kickoff Martinsville had, setting upanother Artesian score. North had twopasses intercepted by the Artesians, andthe Cougars played without starting cor-nerback senior Danny Blann who sat outwith an injured thigh muscle. It was amiserable evening, Nichols concluded.The Cougars raised their spirits andtheir overall record as they ripped up theEdgewood Mustangs defense and won31-7. The Cougars took a 19-0 lead athalf and the Mustangs just couldnt getback in the game during the second half.Gladfelter made it 25-0 early in the thirdquarter on a 5-yard run. Edgewood nevergot back in the game.Vincennes was stopped by seven fumbles, 6 of which North recovered and 3quarterback sacks all brought on byNorths powerful defense. A fumble gaveNorth the ball at the Alices seven late inthe first quarter, and junior Jay Wileyscored on a 4-yard run. Despite fourmore Vincennes fumbles, North couldntscore again until the fourth quarter whenGladfelter found Dan Blann in the end-zone for a 20-yard touchdown pass.Blann outjumped Vincennes bestdefender for the catch. Blann latercaught a 35-yard pass from sub-quarterback junior Phil Bomber to set up thefinal score, a 22-yard field goal by Gray,North 24-0.It was back home for Hoosier HillsConference play. After two quarters ofplay Bedford North Lawerence led 6-0. Inthe third quarter Gray took a hand off ona counter play, split the middle of the B-NL line, then outran three defenders tothe goal line for 66 yards of heavy dutyrunning. I didnt believe they didntcatch him, Nichols said, I bet theircoach didnt believe it either.
