At one time the Cougarswere 9-10 during the season, and wereplaying very erratic baseball. However,the Cougars came back and won theirfinal three games of the regular seasonending up with a 12-10 record.They continued their winning streak inthe sectional by defeating Edgewood 4-3,a team who had whipped them earlier inthe season 8-5, and Brown County 9-1 inthe afternoon games. Then on to thechampionship game went the Cougarswhere they met the Bloomington SouthPanthers, who also had beaten them earlier in the season 8-4.After an excellent pitching performance by senior David Byers, fine defensive play by seniors Mark Cutler, DougToby, Jeff May, Mike Hayes, and MikeMossbrucker, juniors Kent Cutler, PatGladfelter, and Danny Gonzales, andsuper batting performances by the Cougars, especially senior Doug Toby whohit his first home run of his career withtwo men on base, the Cougars came outon top with a 5-2 victory, a sectionalchampionship, and a trip to the regionals.The Cougars faced Greencastle in theopening round of regional play, a teamthey had beaten during the regular season 11-1. After a very exciting and closegame the Cougars were defeated 5-4.The Cougars were led last year bymost valuable player senior Mark Cutler,who led the team in seven offensive categories. Other seniors from the 1977 Sectional Championship team were MikeHayes, Mike Mossbrucker, Jeff May, JeffCampbell, John Fenton, Doug Toby,David Byers, John Walker, and TerryGreene.The Cougar baseballers will have alarge number of positions to fill this yearbecause of the loss through graduationof nine seniors from their 1977 SectionalChampionship Team. Four returning let-termen are Danny Blann, Dan Gonzalez,Pat Gladfelter, and Kent Cutler. Otherseniors who saw action last year areBryan Price, Danny Carpenter, and MikeKonetzka. With this nucleus and themembers of the reserve team who werethe 1977 Hoosier Hills Conferencechampions, Coach Ron Crowe is lookingforward to a successful season onNorths newly completed baseball complex.Adding a bit of excitement to the Terre Haute-Northgame, the Little 500 Balloon race travels overNorths field.With two outs and two men left on base, juniorKent Cutler takes the batters box with excellentform and concentration on the ball.18 baseballJlL |
