Bands Have Successful YearThe Bloomington Northband, as usual, had a veryactive season during the1988-89 school year. Each ofthe programs received severalhonors, and North playedhost to several successfulevents as well. Under the direction of Janis Stockhouse,the bands achieved accomplishments worth noting.The year started off withmarching band season, whichproved quite productive andwell-paced for the regimen,featuring drum majors BekahPheifer and Melisa Goh.Their honors included a second place award at New Albany, a first division rating atI.S.S.M.A., and third at TellCity. They also received a second place at the Bluffton Invitational, on a day that sawthem return to Indianapolisafter the show to perform athalftime of the North-Southfootball game at the HoosierDome. At Bluffton they alsoreceived honors for the bestmusic and best marching. Tofinish their season, they wentto Cincinnati to participate inthe 8th annual Roger BaconBand Invitational, where theyproceeded to win their division.The symphonic band began their season with a combined concert with the BNLsymphonic band in Bedford.The event culminated withboth bands combining toform a 120-member ensemble. The group played a rousing rendition of The Starsand Stripes Forever and received an immediate standingovation. In addition to thisperformance, the symphonicband received an invitation toperform at the prestigiousNorths Colorguard and MarchingBand stand proud.The Marching Band, performing ata home football game, shows thecrowd their excellence.National Adjudicators Invitational in Atlanta, Georgia. Inaddition, this year they returned to the ISSMA contestin hopes of adding a thirdState Championship award totheir trophy case.The Jazz program at Northhad a productive year as well.In December the schoolplayed host to the Bloomington Jazz Festival, which attracted more than two dozenbands from across the state.Overall, this year was outstanding, both for individualsand for the Band program asa whole. This is keeping inline with tradition here atBHSN, a tradition of excellence that extended into thisyear, and no doubt will extend into the future.40 Band |
