The project was somuch ahead that astronauts,Colonel Joe H. Engle and Captain Richard H. Truly had timeto goof off. Only 31 secondsbefore launching and two oilfilters of the three auxilary unitswere found to be clogged. Noone had bothered to change theoil that was used for the April of1981s flight. After changing theoil and checking the space shuttle over again, it was foundready to be launched a secondtime. The Columbia is to belaunched again in 1982. Theflight ended smoothly on adesert airstrip in California.August 3, 1981, Air Controllers Strike, UnitedStates —The 15,000 member Professional Air Traffic ControllersOrganization strike beganAugust 3 against the FederalAviation Administration. The illegal strike was a violation offederal law. Therefore, President Reagan barred any negotiations and warned strikers theywould be fired if the strike didntstop. The strike began whenunion President Robert Poli turned down the final offer on a newcontract. On August 5 thegovernment began firing and onthe 17th they began taking applications to replace striking controllers. In December PresidentReagan announced he wouldrehire the strikers if they choseanother governmental job notrelated to their previous one.July 17, 1981, Hyatt Hotel,Kansas City, Kansas ...The lobby of the Hyatt wasfilled with over 1,000 people forthe Big Band dance party. Thethird floor walkway holding 50people had a crack down thecenter of it and collapsed to thesecond floor holding near 100people. The second floor wasntbuilt strong enough and couldnot hold the debris of the thirdfloor. The second and thirdfloors crashed to the lobby killing 113 people and injuring 180.Rescue teams used constructioncranes to remove bodies fromthe steel and concrete. Thescene of the room was reminiscent to that of a bomb blast. |
