LOREN CARMICHAEL—developmental readingThe English department experimented with variousactivities this year which were different from previousyears. For the first time ever at BSHS, the departmentsponsored a play presented by a New York theatricalgroup, the National Shakespeare Players. The grouptraveled nationally, performing for high school andsmall college audiences. As a prerequisite, all of theEnglish classes read and studied the Shakespeareanplay, Much Ado About Nothing.Also new to BSHS was a new type of instruction forsophomores known as team teaching. The purpose ofthis teaching was to give the students contact with different teachers and their specific talents. On a longterm basis the program provided the students with moreindividual instruction.These activities, of course, were in addition to theregular English curriculum, which presented certain goalsfor the students to.attain. These were to increase communicative ability, improve reading, develop writing,and appreciation of the heritage of literature.
