Row two—LarryStuckey, Bob Ellis, Rick Rechter,Laverne Cooper, Don Hall, TedSkirvin.Cross Country AccountThe Bloomington High School cross countryteam compiled one of the best records of anyprevious team in the schools history. The Panthers posted an undefeated record in small competition. Their only defeats came in the heavilyloaded Shortridge Invitational and in the StateFinals.The harriers opened the 1955 season with a20-36 victory over Paris, Illinois. Coach VernBurns squad returned home for their debut onthe Cascades Golf Course by defeating perennially strong Vincennes.By chalking up victories over Bloomfield andNew Albany, the Panthers continued their winning ways. Tom Curts, who set a new courserecord, led the team in a triangular meet withColumbus and Shelbyville. The Panther harriers walked off with the first three places, andfive of the first seven places.B.H.S. had a little rougher going at the HobartInvitational meet. The squad barely edged theHobart runners as once again Curts led thepurple by finishing sixth. The Southern IndianaAthletic Conference meet was next on the Panther runners schedule. Bloomingtons crosscountry team snaped Vincennes seven-year gripon the S.I.A.C. title. The harriers placed threemen in the top five.The Anderson Indians handed the Pantherstheir first defeat of the season at the thirdannual Shortridge Invitational. At Terre Haute,the harriers captured the Sectionals with a veryfine performance.Bloomington went into the State Finals as aheavy favorite along with Anderson, Shortridge,and Hobart. As it turned out, the three otherfavorites copped the first three places with thePanther runners coming in fourth.
