The Hornets sting left us with a 42-27bump. On the move again, we attacked the Vincennes Alices and broke our losing streak bychalking up a 52-45 win onto the Panther record.We then got the slate ready for the forthcomingstruggle with the Washington Hatchets whoproved a bit dull and were themselves cut whenwe came out on top with a 35-29 score. The1946-47 season ended when the Purples hoppeddown the Dixie highway and collided with theBedford Stonecutters for the second time. A lastglance at the board showed a 46-39 decision forthe Bedford squad.Our team then began practice for the Monroe-Morgan County Sectional Tourney in whichthey hoped to carry off their share of the honors.Our fighting five engaged in a bucket duel withMooresville as their first game in the Sectionalheld at the Martinsville gym. The Mooresvillesquad showed dogged determination as theykept snapping at our heels but time ran out withthe Panthers ahead of a 36-34 tally. The following match with Stinesville gave Bloomingtonfans a scare. The Quarry Lads roared into thelead during the first half, but the Purples succeeded in coming up from behind to give Stinesville the brush-off by a 36-35 conquest. ThePanthers met their final defeat in the claws ofthe Ellettsville Eagles. Caught in a flurry offlying leather, our home five put up a goodbattle, though they lost the tilt 42-34, while theEagles went on to capture the Sectional crown.For the first time in B.H.S. history theschools home basketball games, as well as ourfootball games, were broadcast. W9XHZ alsobrought the tournaments into the homes of basketball enthusiasts.By our teams demonstrations of courageand spirit they showed themselves to possess themajor aim of all athletics—sportsmanship. |
