With somewhat dampenedspirits, they traveled to Greencastle and got theirfirst taste of victory by sharpening their clawson the Tigers with a 38-29 triumph. Back on ourhome floor, the Central of Evansville Bearsblazed through our defense and left us on theshort end of a 43-20 score. Then the SullivanArrows stepped up for a try and were smashedwith a lopsided 49-19 tally.Who will forget the thrill-a-minute top gameof the season when we beat the MartinsvilleArtesians 51-49 by a nerve-wracking overtime.Next the team went to Wiley of Terre Haute andwrecked the Red Streaks 34-29, while holdingWileys star center to a game total of one point.After handing the Bloomington fans a Christmaspackage in the form of a Panther win, the homefive engaged in a New Year holiday tournamentat Crawfordsville with teams from Noblesville,Lebanon, and Crawfordsville. Taking secondplace in the tournament, our boys moved on toMartinsville and thumped the Artesians again,this time by a wider margin of 48-39. Back atthe home stamping grounds our winning streakwas snapped by the Bedford Stonecutters, whocarved a 50-31 loss on the Panther slab. Thefollowing night our attempt to muzzle the NewAlbany Bulldogs failed when they carried off a42-22 game in a glittering fashion.The Panther team met their city rivals, theUniversity Guinea Pigs, before a capacity crowdand established themselves as the favorites byout-shooting the Univee lads 44-38. Twenty-fourhours later our team missed the bandwagonwhen the Bosse of Evansville Bulldogs edged usout by a final count of 46-45. The home gymwas rocked on its foundations when the Pantherscame close to upsetting the Jasper Wildcats. Thegame closed with the scoreboard set at a 43-40loss. Dobson, our teams only sophomore, rackedup a game total of 26 points to become high pointman of the varsitys season. Next the giantColumbus Bulldogs came crashing down on usPAGE 101 |
