Always ascrapper and dangerous whenever he had theball.Rex Jean: Junior end. Hard charging and highspirited, Rex was solid in his position. Opposingbacks found it difficult to go around his end.Rob Cook: Junior center. Captain elect for1942. Although rather light, Robs outstandingdefensive play gained the respect of teammatesand opponents alike.Clark Deal: Sophomore halfback; rugged defensive player; fine passer and consistent groundgainer.Bob Harris: Senior halfback. A hard workerwith plenty of spirit, Bob could deliver whencalled.Bob Dean: Senior Fullback. Most consistentand hardest driving fullback seen in Indiana formany years. His speed ,stamina, power, andclear thinking, caused him to be rated as an all-state quarterback.Bill McConnell: Junior guard. One more year,ahead. Bill has the experience and ability tostrengthen the Panther line.Maurice Reeves: Senior tackle, superior blockerand tackier. Maurice will be missed this year.Ted Lertlier: Senior guard,definitely rugged player.Rather short but aBill Esarey: Senior tackle. Veteran of threeyears varsity play. Bill was one of SouthernIndianas outstanding players in his position.The 1940 Panther gridiron squad proved to beone of the strongest elevens ever seen performon Mumby Field. Although only four returninglettermen bolstered the squad, the locals defeatedseven opponents, tied one, and suffered only onedefeat throughout the nine game schedule.The Panthers massacred the Bloomfield Cardinalsin the opening encounter 27-0. After battlingto a scoreless first half, the Cardinals weakenedand the Purple and White gridders tallied fourtouchdowns; three coming in the final quarter.Journeying down-state, the locals faced a strongCentral of Evansville team and the boys battledto a 13-13 draw. The river foes held a 13-0 half-time advantage, but the locals rallied and withonly forty seconds to go, they pushed over theirsecond touchdown to tie the southern eleven.Meeting the Souths strongest squad, the Sullivan Arrows, the Panthers dropped the only gameof the season after leading at the half 6-0. TheArrows scored two second half touchdowns toturn the tide, 12-6.The Washington Hatchets were the next victimsof the Panther squad by a 25-0 margin. TheHatchets heretofore hadnt been scored upon infive contests, but the locals subdued them infine pigskin style.
