Description: THE SPORTS REVIEWIntramurals ForBoys ResumedThrough the newly re-inaugurated intramural sports system, the boys ofBloomington High School were given theprivilege during 1937-38 to participatein a large variety of sports.An intramural program had formerlyexisted under the supervision of Mr.Phillips but was discontinued a few yearsago. The reorganized program has beenunder the sponsorship of Mr. Bucher,head of the boys physical education department, and Mr. Brogneaux, his assistant.The main purpose behind the intramural program is to provide physicaltraining for boys in sports of their ownchoice. Boys who no longer are takingphysical education as a part of theirregular programs are through this mediumgiven a chance to participate.Each month an average of 700 boysengaged in the program, which was carried on from October through May.The program of activities was dividedinto monthly units with tournamentsbeing staged in each of the sports offered. Champs were determined in thefollowing sports: box hockey, side walktennis, paddle tennis doubles, loop tennis,horseshoe pitching, tether ball, shuffleboard singles and doubles, deck tennissingles and doubles, foul shooting, volleyball, ping-pong singles and doubles, basketball, softball, and soccer.Also included in the program wereseveral tournaments in the grade schoolswhich were under the direction of Mr,Brogneaux.A system whereby a boy might earnan intramural letter was worked out.Points were awarded for each activitywith a total of 425 entitling one to aletter.Included in the intramural sports system was the noon league contests forboys riding the busses to school. Thisprogram was under the direction of Mr.Bretz and was divided into two sports,covering the year.Basketball, with two leagues participating, was played until the weather permitted the playing of baseball outside.The basketball program was dividedinto two periods with a champion beingcrowned for each period.GRIDDERS END SEASONWITH GOOD RECORDMat Artists Capture3rd In State MeetLacking somewhat the showmanship ofthe pro grunt and groansters, Bloomington High Schools mat team, nevertheless,copped third place in the state tournament in 1938.Not only that, but the beefy boyswon five out of seven dual meets duringthe season to make a mild grand slamfor Coach Mumby this year.For their outstanding muscle puffing,eight boys were awarded wrestling let-Finish Runners-Up In S.I. A. C;7 of 9 Opponents Beaten;Hardisty StarsDame Fortune smiled on Bloomingtons football fate in 1937 as B. H. S.enjoyed its most successful season inrecent years.Coach Mumbys stalwarts chalked upseven victories in a nine game scheduleto take second place in the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference.The purple team opened its season byentertaining the Bloomfield Cardinalswith Russell Hardisty pulling the gameters. They were: Mike Thrasher, state I out of the fire by virtue of a sparklingchampion in the 95-pound division; JoeSparks, king of the 1 05 pounders; and BenBruce and Drexel Hughes runners-up in155 and 135 respectively. Other Bbearers for the team are Nat Hill,Bob Patty, Irvin Chitwood, and Ben Wilson.The award selections were made ona different basis this year. Formerly oneof Mumbys prodigies had to win first,second, or third in the state tourney tobe considered, for the B Mens Association. The present requirements are:( 1 ) Participate in and win 60% ofthe dual meets, and qualify for the statetournament, or(2> Win first, second, third, or fourthin the championship eliminations.The victims of Mumbys mangling matteam were Bedford, who kissed the mattwice, Southport, whose lads did likewise, and Muncie, yielding once. Theironly conqueror was Bedford, who turnedthe tables twice.One of the sidelights of the seasonwas the tape twisting of Winston Bed-well, senior kit toter. The team attributesmuch of its phenomenal success to inspiration from Bedwells medicinal management.Due on deck next year to resume thegymnastic wars, are Captain Joe Sparks,Dennis Norman, Irvin Chitwood, CharleyTeague, Bob Patty and a corps of otherexperienced men who have been out during the past year.May good fortune attend their skin.101 yard touchdown dash in the closingseconds of play. Score: 7-0. The ManualRedskins came down for the next gameand bit the dust to the tune of 20-6.In their first foreign tilt the Panthersfor the first time tasted defeat, losingto Sullivan 27-7. There followed twoeasy victories as the Washington Hatchets retired 20-0 and the Linton Minerswere undermined by 26 points. Hardistycontinued to shine.Invading Columbus, the Mumbymencame home conquered 6-0. The seasonended in a blaze of glory as Bicknell lost33-6, Vincennes dittoed, 7-0, and Jason-ville faded en the zero end of 27 points.During the season B. H. S. scored atotal of 147 points to their opponents45. They won six shut-out games whilebeing held to no points in only one battle, the Columbus fracas.Twelve lettermen, including ChalmersGoyert, Dale Mishler, Acton Nunn,Drexel Hughes, Ben Bruce, and HaroldRoberts in the line and Russell Hardisty,Dick Miller, Bob Cummings, Ben Wilson,Jack Cook, and Bob Young in the back-field, riddle the ranks through graduation.Six lettermen remain as a nucleus for afuture dreadnaught.Highlight of the local post-season wasa banquet held at the Masonic Templeon December 9 in honor of the victorioussquad. A large number of gridsters andfans attended to hear E. C. BillyHayes, I. U. track mentor, speak. MayorA. L. Cotton Berndt was toastmasterfor the gala occasion.Page eighty-eight
