TRACKTRACKThe followers of our track teams will refer with pride to the record ofthe 1930 cinder squad. The track team participated in seven difficultmeets; in five of the seven Bloomington took the first place honors andin the other two they were next to best.The Panthers inaugurated the season on April 12 with a quadrangular meet in the university stadium. Bloomington nosed out Washingtonof Indianapolis and took first place. The other teams participating wereShortridge and Bedford. The following week-end Bloomingtons track-sters journeyed to Linton, where they captured first place honors in atriangular meet with Linton and Bicknell.For the first time in many years the Bloomington track team wonfirst place in the South Central Track Meet. Participating in this annualcontest are six of the strongest teams in southern Indiana: Sullivan, Linton, Vincennes, Bedford, Washington, and Bloomington. The Phillips-men amassed a total of 38 7-10 points, against 30 points for Sullivan,their closest competitor. The feature of this meet was the pole vault inwhich Robert Zeis established a new record.On May 2, the local cinder squad journeyed to Indianapolis andcompletely submerged Technical, 71 to 28, in a dual meet. The Indianapolis athletes furnished practically no competition allowing the Panthersto score with ease.The following afternoon the Phillipsmen took part in the Petersburg Invitational Track Meet in which the strongest teams of SouthernIndiana participated. As highlights of this meet Bartlett won the highpoint honor with three first places, and the half-mile relay team won firstplace in a field of eight contesting teams. Petersburg nosed the Panthersout of first place by just two points.On May 9, Bloomington was host to Salem and Brazil in a triangularmeet. Again the locals were forced into second place, this time by Brazil.Of course, the outstanding feature of this meet was the superb performance of the famous Ivan Fuqua of Brazil. The young star certainly camethrough in great style that afternoon, and it was only by his remarkableperformance that Bloomington was defeated.The sectional was held in the university stadium the following Saturday. Bloomington won the contest and qualified nine men and thehalf-mile relay team for the state meet. However, in the state meet onlyone of our men scored. Spriggs placed second in the 880 yard dash.The relay teams made a brilliant record during the season. Out often starts the teams captured six firsts and four seconds. This successfulseason in track added to our collection some very beautiful trophies andawards.Page Seventy-nine |
