WRESTLINGWRESTLING SEASONThe 1931 wrestling team established the highest record and enjoyedthe most successful season of any of the teams representing Bloomington High School this year. When the wrestlers started their season, theydetermined to defend the State Championship title and keep it in Bloomington. During the season the Panthers won six of the seven meets entered, lost none, and were tied only by Muncie.The Purple journeyed to Bedford on January 19, and took a fast andexciting meet from the ancient rivals, 20 to 18. This initial exhibitionwas a warning to the rest of the state and to future opponents.In two following meets Bloomington won a close and difficult contest from Muncie, 19 to 17, and another from Bedford, 19 to 15.These dual meets were giving the boys confidence, experience, and thedetermination to go through the remainder of the season successfully andcapture the state crown again.On a northern trip the Panthers were tied by the Muncie athletes,19 to 19, the only blot on the seasons record. However, the night following the Muncie meet, Wabash fell a victim to the Mumbymen, 26 to6. The last dual meet of the season which was held in the local gymnasium, was another decided victory over Wabash.The following week-end the Purple participated in the Indiana StateWrestling Meet. In the meet the locals exhibited extraordinary skill andtook first place honors from Muncie, their closest competitor, 39 to 30.This victory kept the state championship in Bloomington for anotheryear. Myers placed first in the 100 pound class, Johnson placed third inthe 108 pound class, Brown placed first in the 115 pound class, Bryceplaced second in the 125 pound class, Hazel placed first in the 13 5 poundclass, Tatum placed first in the 145 pound class, and McDaniel placedfirst in the heavyweight class.The following men were awarded the varsity B: Robert Myers,Charles Johnson, Arthur Brown, Tom Bryce, Ross Hazel (captain), JohnTatum, Forrest Alexander, Verdie McMillan, John Henry, and CharlesMcDaniel.Page Seventy-eight |
