Description: THE Bloomington High School Speech Department under thedirection of Miss Dorothy Robertson Avon fame for theBloomington High School in a new Way this year. Not that itAvas really a new way, but it Avas a new thing for our high School.It had been years since the Bloomington High School had beenrepresented on the discussion platform and on the debate floorso successfully, and the awakening of interest was very encouraging. Nothing succeeds like success, goes the old saying, and suchwas true with the interest that rose from the success attained byBloomington High School orators.The first speech activity to take place was the debating team.The affirmative division of this team debated against WashingtonHigh School, and the negative division debated against Bedford.The subject Avas: Resolved, that the Principle of the ChainStore is detrimental to the best interest of the American Public.Both teams lost, although both put up a Avonderful stand, and thenegative team lost by a score of 1429 to 1422. After winning thelocal contest, and the county elimination, Harriet Williams tookthird place in the district meet of the National Oratorical Contest.John SemboAver won the local contest from Ross Lockridgeand Earl Skidmore in the Indiana State Discussion League Contest on the Indiana Constitution and finished first in the state.Kathryn Rundell and Lucile Bojrer represented the local highschool at the South Central Reading and Oratorical contests andfurnished very credible showings. The former gave an orationon the Living Lincoln and the latter gave a reading entitledThe Admirals Ghost.All these participations dreAv large numbers of competitors,and the competition for places on the debating squads AAras keen.The final selection was, for the affirmative: Earl Skidmore, NedWood, and Warren Fielder. The negative A\Tas composed of AlbertDonato, Harriet Williams, and John Sembower. The members ofthis years speech squads hope that next years class Avill keepup the fight for good speech records in inter-school competitionnext vear.Ninety-two*_
