AVhen Coach Phillips came to the highschool and began to organize his material and his coaching staff oneof the first things that he did was to provide for a strong second teamand place over it a competent coach. This coach was Coach Carmichaelwho lead his followers and charges to not only a season successful fromthe standpoint of building material, which is the primary purpose ofthe second team department, but also from the won and lost percentage.No men on this second team were allowed to be over third year men soall of them will be back next year. They all demonstrated excellentspirit and attitude all throughout the season.The idea on which Coach Phillips worked in organizing the secondteam was the major league baseball camp with its smaller league training camp for its younger players. In the second team games someyounger men who were not quite good enough to play in the first fiveand yet would develop with experience wTere played consistantly to givethis needed experience. There were frequent shifts in the lineup of thesecond stringers for the first team continually called on it for support.■One Hundred Nine |
