THE PHILOMATHEON CLUBThe Philomatheon Club, an organization for thepromotion of public speaking and debating, was organized in Bloomington High School five years ago byHamer Finn 22. The original organization was very-enthusiastic and scheduled numerous debates withother schools.The proper functions of the club are to sponsorthe Discussion League and interscholastic debating.During the past year a* public speaking class was organized which took charge of the power formerly wieldedby the club. The Southern Indiana Debating Leaguemade this step seem advisable.Six debates were scheduled for the year, three athome and three away. The schedule is as follows:AT HOMEFebruary 1 1—Affirmative vs. Shelbyville.February 20—Negative vs. Franklin.Februarv 24—Affirmative vs. Martinsville.AWAYFebruary 10—Negative vs. Seymour.February 20—Affirmative vs. Bedford.February 24—Negative vs. Columbus.The affirmative team was made up of Margaret Williams, Darwin Rathburn, and CatherineCarpenter. Those on the negative team were Lloyd Branam, Rex Bradt, and Elizabeth Eagleson.The teams this year were chosen from the class, but Miss Wilson, who is in charge of theclass, is planning to have for next year, tryouts from the whole school, making debating aparamount activity in Bloomington High School.All through the development of the Philomatheon Club, Mrs. Dickey, its devoted sponsor,has been a very enthusiastic advisor and to her much of the credit for the clubs good workis due. After this year the club will be formally dismissed from school activities. The officersof the club for this year were: Ruth Kirby, President; Harvey Poling, Vice-President; RuthKuersteiner, Secretary-Treasurer. Other members of the club are Charles Holder. Charles Wylie,Darwjn Rathburn, Orville Beck, Catherine Carpenter, Grace Thayer, Ruth Axtell, MargaretWilliams, George McCartney, Rex Bradt, James Hendricks, Kermit Harrell, Mary ElizabethJohnson, Katharyn Hoadley, Elsa Kuersteiner, and Mrs. Dickey.Page Eighty-two |
