Description: THE GOTHIC 24PROSPECTS FOR A NEW GYMBloomingtons two greatest needs are the completion of the Griffy Creekwater project and a high school gymnasium. The former must be developedbefore the latter can even be started. The interest shown by the immensecrowds attending athletic contests all over the State of Indiana indicates thatthe growing demand for gymnasiums with adequate seating capacity is still inits infancy. Our neighboring towns, Bedford, Martinsville, Columbus, Shelby-ville, and Franklin have also seen this need that Bloomington is at the presentrealizing and have taken definite steps toward its completion. Martinsvillesgymnasium, which was finished Feb. 23, is a beautiful mammoth structure seating 5,200 people. Franklins gym is also finished and money is being raisednow to pay for it. Bonds have been sold for Bedfords gym and work is already started. What is the matter with Bloomington? Are we going to let ourneighbors surpass us in the community spirit that backs high school athletics?Among the plans suggested, the most favorable one includes a seatingcapacity of approximately seven thousand people, a stage for community purposes and facilities for any community interest.. Nothing has been definitelydecided concerning the installation of a swimming pool.In addition to being used for athletic contests, the new structure will alsobe used for automobile shows, county fairs, concerts or any other type of civicactivities. The exact location of our new gym has not been definitely decided butwill probably be the lot south of the high school building or west of the Seminary school building. On account of the water situation of our city, no definite plans have beenmade for the erection of the gym and no action will be taken perhaps, untilnext year. Good authority states that the building of the gym will be financedby gifts, stock paying interest, and season tickets. We ought to have two opening nights—one being for Martinsville and theother for Bedford, with a program exhibiting real basketball skill and civicspirit and school pride.Page Twenty-Six
