THE GOTHIC 24Sitting—Shoemaker, Coach Esarey, Farmer.Standing—Moser, At^vood, Tan iiyke, Geiger, Smith, Captain Correll, Hall, Talbot, Neal.BASKETBALLWhen Ralph Esarey started building a basket ball team last fall he faced ahard job. Correll and Farmer were the only letter men from last year, but asthe season went on, the leading sport writers in Indiana picked Bloomington asone of the better members of the Big Ten.Bloomington lost the first game of the year, to Lyons, but the Purplecame back in old time form in the next game, and trounced Orleans. In theirearly season rush, even the strong Greencastle and Columbus quintets failed tostop the locals. Then Bloomington journeyed to Shelbyville, and tasted the first real defeatof the season. Martinsville added to the sorrow in the Purple camp by annexing a game by two lone field goals. Before one of the largest crowds of the year, the Purple lost to Bedford onthe University floor. The after Christmas games saw the Esarey men in their top form. Gameswere lost and won to Vincennes and Franklin. Another game was lost toBedford. The season closed at Martinsville on February 29, when the Correllmenlost to the present state champs by a margin of six points.Dillon Geiger will pilot the team next year. With Neal, Hall, Moser, Smith,Van Dyke and Atwood back next year and with some of the men from theseconds, the prospects for a winning team are bright.Page Eleven |
