I began to succeed in my work. But I found that I had ceasedto care. I had just as well tell you the truth. I thought if you had really loved me youwould have been willing to marry me without great wealth.Cornelia--You are entirely right. I know now that I never really loved you. WhenI saw you to-night I fainted because I feared you had come to claim my promise.To-night my engagement to Frank Peake was announced.Peter--Let me congratulate you. I hope you will be very happy. I am now marriedto Jess Alsman and living very happily.Cornelia (clasping Peters hand)--Oh, Peter, I am glad things have turned out thisway.(Enter Frank.)Frank--Here are the two conspirators! Young man, what do you mean by cominghere and trying to steal my fiance? Answer me that. G-r-r-r-r.Peter--Mr. Peake, I have no intention of stealing Miss Vos from you. I wish tocongratulate you on being engaged to such a fine young lady.Frank--What kind of talk is this? You cant throw me off the track that way,Cornelia--Frank, dont be so jealous. I heard that Peter was dead and when I sawhim in the box I received such a shock that I fainted.Frank--Dont lie to me.Peter (taking the hint)--I was in a railroad wreck some time ago which disabledme for several weeks. This caused a false report to be circulated that I was dead. Iassure you I came here for no mean reason.Frank (sarcastically)--Oh. I suppose not, I suppose you werent even holding handswhen I came in.Cornelia--Frank, dont be so foolish. Peter and I were and still are very goodfriends, but no more. Peter is now married.Peter--I must be leaving. I hear music so I suppose the second act is beginning.I am very glad I got to see you both.Frank--Well, Ill take it for granted that you are telling the truth this time, Burk-halter. Goodbye. Come around and see us any time you are in the city.(Holds out his hand, which Peter clasps.)Cornelia--Goodbye Peter. Give my love to Jess. Bring her with you the next timeyou come.
