Description: that you are to tend this little garden plot along the hills. This, it seems, is the work that He meant for you to do.It is the task that is nearest at hand; it is the task forwhich you are fitted, and therefore you must tend it well, and plant your seeds with care, and nurture them that theymay grow and blossom and yield their fullest measure atharvest time. And in doing this you must be content.BEULAH MOSER, 15.PalinurusDeep rolled the thunders ominous voice,And oft the jagged lightning flashed,Then loud once more, with deepened roar,Again the mighty thunder crashed. The Trojan ships defenseless lay,Bared to the Storm-Kings boisterous glee; The waves rolled high, the blackened skyHung lowering oer the leaden sea. Then swift with speed like lightning flash,A furious gust of wind arose; With mighty sweep across the deepIt added to the Trojans woes. For Palinurus, he who ruledThe largest ship with wisdoms checkThe storm-blast seized, and unappeased,It hurled him from the deck. The mighty waves, with towering crests,Soon hid the Trojan from all sight,But, though distrest, he still found restAnd hopes of safety in his plight. For in his hands the rudder lay,Which was een then as true a friend,As when the ship, with many a dip,Her way did safely wend. The rudders strength upbore his weight,And so from thoughts of drowning free,For three long days, and three long nights,The Trojan tossed upon the sea.How gladly at the fourth days birthThat helmsman saw the storm clouds fly!The winds grew still, at Neptunes will,The heaving sea more calm did lie.Down, down, among the white-capped waves,The luckless helmsman headlong fell; His comrades cries, their tears, their sighsCould naught regain, could naught repel. Then as the golden sun arose,What gladness filled the Trojans breast! Not far away, the glowing dayRevealed the haven of his rest.Page Forty-four
