Description: The Passing of an Indiana TreasureA great man passed away this March 18th. Herman B. Wells waswell known as a kind and influential man. He was president of IndianaUniversity from 1938 to 1962. Dr. Wells made a powerful impact onmany people and accomplished many things in his life. Over the yearshe was very active in integrating the LU. campus. Dr Wells also lovedmusic and the arts and fully supported LU.’s School of Music.He was honored as “Man of the Century” for the state of Indiana.Dr. Wells made regular appearances to student activities like IUgames, visited students in dorms, and attended musical activities suchas operas and concerts. People who worked for and with Dr. Wellsalways said what a pleasure it was.“With rare exceptions,” Wells said, “I had happy relationshipswith the students during my days in the president’s office. I saved timefor contact with them: I tried to accept their invitations even though insome instances it was not particularly convenient to do so.”It was said about Wells that he “was driven to work for the betterment and welfare of the university to which he devoted his life.”News52
