Aurora Alternative High School, The Phoenix, 2000, Page 30

Description: Out of eleven surveys two people were for the test andsaid it was no big deal, but maybe it’s because they passed thetest, so they have no idea what itfeels like to be held back from yourgraduation. Alicia Strickling a seniorat Aurora said, “When I was firsttold that I had to pass the GatewayExam in order to graduate fromhigh school I hated it, and I wasreally scared. After I took the test, and passed it, my confidence wasboosted greatly.” The rest of thesurveys were from seniors whodidn’t pass and some have to eitherwait until next year to graduate whileothers must wait until spring breakfor retakes. What if the kids fail inthe spring? What happens when you have gone through all yourchances to pass and you still fail? Does that mean you don’t getyour diploma? No one reallyknows the answer to thatquestion. But this is what’sgoing on in a lot of students’heads. Thinking about allthat, and your everyday lifeissues, do you think that youpersonally could pass ahuge test like this knowingthat you won’t graduate fromhigh school unless you passit? It’s very hard and irritating. What do we do?Carrie’s talents in English don’t help her math.Kate Myers doesn’t feel the Gateway is anappropriate measure of knowledge.Gateway30
