Aurora Alternative High School, The Phoenix, 2000, Page 12

Description: One of Aurora’s annual get together takes place at NinthStreet Park right across from school. Usually the school goesthere once around the beginning of the year and every otherweek at the end of the year. Students and teachers pitch in onthe food, so there’s always a variety of different foods to eat andchoose from. Other people play basketball and serenade ontheir guitars. This year we went to Bryan Park for a change ofpace, but ran into a slight problem. Harmony also showed up atthe park, and it turns out they had reserved the shelter.Ooops.... sorry Harmony! The first picnic of the year can beone of the best ones for some people, especially for the newstudents who aren’t familiar with Aurora. They get a feel on howunique and different the (this) school is. Think about it, howmany other schools take a few hours out of class time to go tothe park socialize, get to know each other and have a goodtime? Not too many with the number of kids in most schoolsthere’s too much lecturing, stuff to get done and graded. Noactual time to get to know people other than the ones you’veknown since first grade. The majority of the kids who comehere find such peace and acceptance in themselves becausethey are around others who accept them because they havelearned who they are as a person. That’s probably one of thebest things about the picnics, taking some time for studentsand teacher to get to know one another. And you can alwayscount on a sing-along with Clarence and his guitar.Playground equipment at Bryan Park did not sit idle while Aurora students werethere. Giacomo McGuire, Thomas Herbin, and Al Trendelman get dizzy together.Picnic--by Alissa Fleetwood
