Chuck Holloway Says..The ideals of an Alternative School are nothing new for Chuck Holloway. Chuck taught atWilliam Smith Alternative School in Colorado from 1981 to!985. There he taught both English andSocial Studies. He had the opportunity to visit and observe all kinds of Alternative programs andschools. This experience provided him with the knowledge of how to develop an Alternative school. The differences between teaching and administration are many for Chuck. Although he isindirectly involved with teaching kids and the sharing of knowledge, he does much more. He talksmore frequently with kids, parents, teachers, and community members. Some look at his garrulousmanner as a curse, but not Chuck. He sees it as a strength and benefit because he believes communication is very important. Chuck enjoys making decisions that benefit the school. He believes that “ People don’t tend to find alternatives to things when they’re working reallywell. They want alternatives when the regular stuff isn’t working.”Chuck is veiy proud of the students and staff this first year. It has not been an easy year, withthe construction going on on the school grounds and learning to work with the small size of ourbuilding. The entire school spent its first quarter as what Chuck calls “ a homeless school” as classeswere held at the Boy’sand Girl’s Club while our building was still under construction. Although timeshave been difficult, Chuck has seen people make things work. He continues to tell everyone to hangin there and trust that things will “work out”. Eventually, the most important things did. Kids cameto school, earned credit towards graduation, and learned something about themselves and what theycan accomplish. In the future, Chuck is looking forward to a change in curriculum. He is interested in researching Alternative teaching styles which are less traditional and more attuned to how kids learn. He would also like to expand the curriculum to include Science and Art classes.Chuck believes that the best part of his job is helping kids. He enjoys doing something hebelieves in. Thanks for being our Catcher in the Rye, Chuck!Chuck Holloway moves into hisnew office at Aurora after working out of the administrationbuilding for several months.SPEEDLIMIT |
