Aurora Alternative High School, The Phoenix, 1996, Page 10

Description: AURORA CHOSEN ASSCHOOL NAMEFrom the beginning, it was determined that the school would be named bythe students. After all, it was our school. Once we were in our building, webegan thinking about various names. They ranged from Chuckie’s School ofHigher Learning to Neptune to Arbor.Midway through the third nine weeks, we began the process in earnest. There were three choices, Raintree, Diversity, and Arbor. Although one namehad more votes than the other two, it was not an overwhelming choice. Thestudents and staff agreed to repeal the vote and the process continued. On March 1st, the weekly Town Meeting was dedicated exclusively to thepurpose of finally settling the controversial process of creating a name worthyof our school. We needed something that expressed our diversity and ourmission. Over twenty names were on the chalkboard to begin with—but manywere deleted because no one spoke up for them. It came down to Aurora,Kismet, and Pandora. The vote was overwhelmingly for Aurora.Aurora Borealis is the official name for the Northern Lights. The studentshere are similar to the Northern Lights—we are all unique and colorful people.Aurora, by itself, means the dawn. For many of us, this school was a newbeginning in education.Although the name was official for the students and staff from March 1, itwas not formalized until the School Board approved it on Thursday, April 11,by a unanimous vote.
