Joseph and Enola Gardner informational sign

Description: Sign reads: Joseph and Enola GardnerBorn in Kentucky, and orphaned at 14, Joseph Gardner worked his way through medical school. He was a surgeon for the 24th Kentucky Infantry, a Union regiment, during the Civil War. In 1866, he brought his first wife and four children to Bedford to open a medical practice. Soon after, his wife died. He then married Elizabeth Malott in 1868. The building that is now City Hall was the Malott family home. Elizabeths father, Michael Malott, a merchant and banker had built the home in 1850. Elizabeth and Joseph inherited the home and had two sons before her death in 1887. Dr. Gardner helped discover and develop the kaolin mines near Huron, had financial interests in limestone quarries, and was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives in 1880. In 1888, Joseph married Enola Lee, a co-worker of Clara Bartons. He soon shared his wifes devotion to the Red Cross, and was a charter member of the American Red Cross. Joseph and Enola donated their 782-acre farm south of Bedford to the Red Cross in 1893. In 1901 they sold their home to the City of Bedford to be used as the City Hall.
