Sign reads: The Red Cross CabinThe logs of the Red Cross Cabin are now in storage but once funding is secured for restoration, the cabin will be rebuilt to interpret the Red Cross Story in Lawrence County. Joseph and Enola Gardner built a grand mansion on the Red Cross Farm and filled it with Red Cross memorabilia. Tragically, the home burned in 1904. The Gardners barely escaped, saving only a few items. Undaunted they rebuilt a smaller cabin in the same location using logs salvaged from other buildings on the farm: an old stable, the Sherlock double house, and the Allen Carr house. The resultant log house served as the Gardners home for many years. When they passed away, Judge Chester A. Davis lived in the house for nearly 40 years. It was a restaurant for 12 years. Then in 1978, the La-Or-Ma Shrine Club purchased the building and announced it was to be torn down. Maxine Hurd, a local woman, gathered local interest to move the cabin to the Bedford High School where she envisioned school children could learn about history. Although the cabin was moved, it soon fell again into disrepair. In 2011, after 35 years at the High School, the cabin was taken down and moved to Spring Mill State Park where it awaits funds to once again be rebuilt. For most of the logs it will be the fourth time they have been reassembled into a new structure. What a story they could tell.......Under right photo reads: The picture above was how the cabin appeared when it was originally constructed in 1904.
