American royal winner

Description: On back of photograph: About 1929. For a number of years in the early days of FFA in Kansas City, we asked breeders of purebred cattle to award a heifer to the FFA member who had the first prize steer in the show. In this picture to the extreme left is Joseph F. Porter, President Kansas City Power & Light Company, who had a farm near Kansas City where he bred Shorthorn cattle. In the rear is John Burns, representative of the American Shorthorn Cattle Association, Kansas City, Missouri.Unfortunately, I do not remember the name of the FFA member who is holding his 1st Prize Shorthorn steer. I think he is from Maryville, Missouri. This picture by the side the American Royal Building was at the time of the presentation of the heifer by Mr. Porter.Mr. Porter helped us on numerous occasion during the early days of FFA in Kansas City. We realized that an overflow crowd would attend one of the early public speaking contests so Mr. Porter permitted us to use the auditorium of the Kansas City Power & Light Company to take care of the large group. All he ever received was thanks.
