Ladle and Tureen Done with a Sherbourn Castle Pattern

Description: The bowl is grayish white on the outside. On the inside it is decorated in a blue design characteristic of the Staffordshire potteries. The border is grapes, leaves and flowers with a scene showing cows grazing in a meadow with trees in the background. The handle has fine stripes up and down ending with a hooked shape in the form of a birds head and neck.; An oval dish in rich blue color. This rich blue color was first adopted in England early in the 19th century and was an echo of the Oriental blues, as well as the Dutch Delft. Until about 1830 blue was almost the sole color in use in the Staffordshire potteries. The color was cheap and flowed easily and its density hid from view the imperfections in ware and workmanship. This dish features a view of Sherbourn Castle on either side with cow grazing on the lawn with willowy trees. The borders are flowers, grapes and leaves. The handles are shell shaped with open rings at either side of the handle proper. It has a matching ladle.
