Shlah, Zaid (author)Ingalls, Cyndi (printer); Original Broadside: Al-Mutanabbi Street Broadsides Arthur and Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts at the FAU Libraries Letterpress. This broadside is from the collection of a historic suite of hand-printed literary broadsides which are a part of the Al-Mutannabi Street Starts Here broadside project at the Arthur and Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts at the FAU Libraries. Thirty-three Beads on a String, by Zaid Shlah, is at once moving and absorbing. Visually, the poem’s theme presented a solution in illustrative layout: a string of beads. I printed each stanza as its own “bead,” circling in toward the center and the final “click.” The process required re-registration for each stanza; I was able to produce about five beads a day. The beauty of the project became the wonderfully repetitive slap of the platen and depth of meaning as each stanza was strung onto the string. I chose a deep blue for the string of beads, and gold for the titling work. |
