A Bookseller

Description: Platke, Bernd W. (author) Morrison, Andrew (printer)
Letterpress with Linoleum cut. Edition of 15.The broadside is printed on Somerset 250gsm grey in a whole host of typefaces – mostly Univers, Cheltenham, Gill Sans and Kabel. This broadside is from the collection of a historic suite of hand-printed literary broadsides which are a part of the Al-Mutannabi Street Starts Here broadside project at the Arthur and Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts at the FAU Libraries.
Although I felt sympathy, guilt and outrage at the bombing of innocent people in al-Mutanabbi Street - I could not assume that I could fully understand their situation nor did I want to be in any way condescending towards them by imposing my own feelings. Though we may offer our support and voice our protest, there remains a physical and cultural separation between us. I considered what to write for some time and eventually wrote a piece – in the style of oratorical declaration – that supports a trade I do understand – bookselling. Booksellers are not just tradesman, they are disseminators of ideas, their premises are centres for social and political exchange and an attack upon them is an attack upon culture itself.
