Description: |
This collection supports and promotes awareness to the important mission and framework of the Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here Coalitions focus on the lasting power of the written word and the arts in support of the free expression of ideas, the preservation of shared cultural spaces, and the importance of responding to attacks, both overt and subtle, on artists, writers, and academics working under oppressive regimes or in zones of conflict, despite the destruction of that literary/cultural content. Not a Straight Line commemorates the burning of the ancient booksellers street in Baghdad in March 2007. It was created as part of the Al-Mutanabbi Street Project, which was A Call to Action for Letterpress Printers! To protest & commemorate the bombing of al-Mutanabbi Street, the centre of bookselling in Baghdad, on March 5th 2007. The project aims to re-assemble some of the inventory of the reading material that was lost in the car bombing of al-Mutanabbi Street. |
