digital pigment inkjet print. Open Edition. Inspiration: The candle is a universal symbol for healing and hope. All over the world, people gather for a candlelight vigil wherever and whenever there has been violence or injustice. My intent is to create a visceral sense of connection for the viewer. If we experience the piece as a deep meditation, we become the ones keeping vigil, grieving over the ruins, and bearing the hope for a better future. Printing process: The print was created in Photoshop and custom printed in my home studio. It consists of three digitally manipulated elements: a flame, a candle, and a pile of burnt books. The composite was printed out 4 wide; then professionally photographed by Bob Hsiang. For the final print, the reshot image was blown up 200% in high resolution. Creative process: As with all my creative efforts, I have had to wrestle with my ego until it finally got out of the way.
