Gordon C. Greene (steamboat)

Description: This boat was built in Jeffersonville, Indiana and was originally called Cape Girardeau. She was acquired by the Greene Line in 1935 and became their family boat with Captain Thomas R. Greene in command. His mother was usually on board with his wife, Letha, and other members of the family. Captain Toms brother, Captain Chris B. Green and their father Gordon C. Greene, commanded their own boats. Mother Mary B. Greene occasionally took command of a boat. The Gordon C. Green spent her final years in several different ports as a restaurant boat. Early on December 3, 1967, a Sunday morning, she sank in St. Louis. The Greene family had close connections with Madison, Indiana, keeping a wharf-boat here until 1938 when it was taken down by ice.
