Tombstones, West Maplewood Cemetery, Anderson, Ind.

Description: These tombstone statues in West Maplewood Cemetery, Anderson are lifelike replicas of the children buried beneath them. Charles Ingersoll Hilligoss (1871-1887) and Gertrude Pauline Hilligoss (1875-1881) were brother and sister. When Charles died, their grief-stricken parents couldnt bear the thought they might be forgotten. They sent photographs of the children to a sculptor in Italy who carved the statues. An iron fence once surrounded them, but it was taken during WWII for scrap metal.
