Letter from Charles Snider to Jesse Dorsey 3 Mar 1943

Description: Snider is in North Africa. He thanks Dorsey for all his letters. He has had some rough days and lost some friends. There is no electricity where he is.This letter is part of a large group of letter written to or by Jesse G. Dorsey during World War II. Dorsey ran the community house for the Louisville Cement Company in Speed, Indiana. Being a veteran of World War I, he knew the value of providing support to the troops. He wrote letters and sent the company newsletter (Speedometer) to several hundred service men and women during the war. The community house also hosted weekend parties for soldiers from Fort Knox, Kentucky during the war.

MYSELF, I JUST DONT WRITE MUCH OR SAY MUCH SO MAYBE YOU WILL FORGIVE ME.IVE BEEN HERE SINGE NOV. 8 AND IM SURE THANKING THE LORD THAT Ill STILL HERE IN AFRICA. IVE SURE SEEN A LOT OF ROUGH DAYS AND SEVERAL OF MY GOOD FRIENDS MISSING.THERE ARE A FEW FROM JEFF I KNOW YET. IVE BEEN THROUGH THE MILL SEVERAL TIMES AND STILL GOING. SOMETIMES I THINK MY NERVES ARE MADE OF IRON. I HAVENT SEEN A CITY FOR SEVERAL MONTHS OR ONE WITH LIGHTS ON SINCE I LEFT THE STATES. YES, I RECEIVED THE CHRISTMAS BOX FROM THE MILL AND THANKS TO ALL IT MAY CONCERN.YOU SURE HAVE BEEN FAITHFUL TO ME-- I JUST DONf T KNOW HOW TO THANK YOU IN WORDS.IT ISNT VERY MUCH WE CAW SAY OUT HERE IN THESE HILLS, ONLY THEY SURE COME IN HANDY A LOT OF TIMES TO ME. IVE BEGUN TO THINK A WHOLE LOT OF THEM.WHEN WE WERE AROUND A CITY THE AMERICAN RED CROSS HAS BEEN THE ONLY THING IVE SEEN AND THEY HELP THE SOLDIERS THE BEST THEY CAN.WELL, ILL CLOSE THINKING OF ALL MY GOOD FRIENDS BACK THERE AND HOPING THEYRE ALL WELL AND PLEASED WITH WHAT WE ARE DOING TO HELP.AS EVER,CHARLES SNIDER
