Description: This list shows all service men during World War II that were entertained by the Speed Community House in Speed, Indiana from 1942 to 1945. The Speed community would host soldiers mostly from Ft. Knox, Kentucky for the weekend. The soldiers would stay in the homes of Speed residents. They would have parties for them, take them to church on Sunday, and have a dinner. Young women from the community would be hostesses at the parties. Jesse Dorsey ran the community house for the Louisville Cement Company. Being a veteran of World War I, he knew the value of providing support to the troops. These parties were one part of what he did. He also wrote letters and sent the company newsletter to several hundred service men and women during the war. Many letters found in this digital collection are from the people in this list. This list was compiled by Dorsey. Photographs of these service men can be seen in the 2 scrapbooks included in this digital collection. This item is part of a large group of letter written to or by Jesse G. Dorsey during World War II. Dorsey ran the community house for the Louisville Cement Company in Speed, Indiana. Being a veteran of World War I, he knew the value of providing support to the troops. He wrote letters and sent the company newsletter (Speedometer) to several hundred service men and women during the war. The community house also hosted weekend parties for soldiers from Fort Knox, Kentucky during the war.
