Popp writes from Stillwater, Oklahoma. She describes her journey and the scene of their arrival in Stillwater. She was assigned to the same apartment as Frances. There are nine girls in this apartment. She describes a typical day and the importance of keeping things in order. They have liberty on the weekends and attend church on Sunday. They all got 3 typhoid shots, 1 small pox and a double tetanus shot. They are training to become Yeomen. After 3 months of school they will be able to take shorthand, typing, history, and Navy Correspondence. This letter is part of a large group of letter written to or by Jesse G. Dorsey during World War II. Dorsey ran the community house for the Louisville Cement Company in Speed, Indiana. Being a veteran of World War I, he knew the value of providing support to the troops. He wrote letters and sent the company newsletter (Speedometer) to several hundred service men and women during the war. The community house also hosted weekend parties for soldiers from Fort Knox, Kentucky during the war. |
