Letter from Floyd L. Riggle to Jesse G. Dorsey, October 11, 1945.

Description: Riggle writes from Manilla, Philippine Islands. He just came back from Nagasaki, Japan. He describes the damage left behind from the bomb. His ship, the U.S.S. Grimes, was the first transport in Tokyo Bay. They followed the battleship Iowa and put troops ashore in Yokosuka. He could see Mt. Fujiyama. He comments on the damage in Manilla. He thinks they will go to Taiwan and then to San Francisco. Then he should get leave. He hopes Dorsey’s mother recovers from her broken leg. This letter is part of a large group of letter written to or by Jesse G. Dorsey during World War II. Dorsey ran the community house for the Louisville Cement Company in Speed, Indiana. Being a veteran of World War I, he knew the value of providing support to the troops. He wrote letters and sent the company newsletter (Speedometer) to several hundred service men and women during the war. The community house also hosted weekend parties for soldiers from Fort Knox, Kentucky during the war.
