Letter from Anthony G. Perry to Jess Dorsey, August 2, 1943.

Description: Perry included a used pass with the letter. He used it to leave camp to see his wife in Waynesville, Missouri. His current assignment is in the woods in the Ozark Mountains. He has passed basic training. While writing this letter, he is outside sitting on top of the truck and it is very hot. He is watching some of the guys as they have a big black snake up a tree. There are Nazi prisoners at the camp and some of them do not look “a day over 16”. When the prisoners march, they sing a song to their “Idol the paper hanger (Hitler)” however they don’t cause much trouble. Before the Nazi prisoners came to camp, there had been Italian prisoners. Some of the soldiers in the camp had just returned from Iceland and said that people there would spit in their faces. If the people who spit in the faces of the American soldiers were spotted in town after dark by the soldiers then they would likely get beat up. Perry closes the letter stating that rumors are plentiful. He plans to see Dorsey August 24. He will try to get chevrons from the different ranks for Dorsey to add to his collection. This letter is part of a large group of letter written to or by Jesse G. Dorsey during World War II. Dorsey ran the community house for the Louisville Cement Company in Speed, Indiana. Being a veteran of World War I, he knew the value of providing support to the troops. He wrote letters and sent the company newsletter (Speedometer) to several hundred service men and women during the war. The community house also hosted weekend parties for soldiers from Fort Knox, Kentucky during the war.
