Description: |
Mother Theodore writes that the consecration of Bishop St. Palais was attended by Bishop Miles of Nashville, who performed the rites, and Bishop Spalding of Louisville. The Archbishop of St. Louis and the Bishop of Cincinnati were unable to attend because of bad roads and the spread of cholera. She describes the sleet storm taking place during the consecration, the terrible journey from Vincennes eight days later in open wagons. The poverty of Bishop St. Palais required that the Congregation assume the expense of clothing him. Sister Olympiade made his cassocks, as well as clothing for all of the missions, the workmen, and orphans at the Seminary. Mother Theodore continues by describing the spread of cholera and the establishment of a hospital in Terre Haute. The demand for the Sisters is widespread. Dated February 8, 1849. |
