Description: |
Interview with Thomas L. Christian, teacher, principal of Lebanon High School (1929-1943), and superintendent of Lebanon Community School Corporation (1940s-1960s). Christian talks about teaching at township schools in Clinton Township and at Wabash College before World War I. He then talks about his military service during the First World War and how he afterwards became a teacher in Lebanons schools. Under Christians superintendency, Lebanon eliminated mid-year promotions (getting rid of A and B classes in the grades), started its kindergarten program, launched its lunch program, added vocational agriculture and a print shop to the high schools facilities, reinstituted its football program, and began its special education initiatives; Christian also led the school system through an extensive building program resulting in new buildings for the High School, Central Elementary, and Harney Elementary, and an extension to Stokes Elementary. As well, he discusses his involvement with the Boone County Reorganization Committee which coordinated school consolidations throughout the county. |
