Description: |
Letter from Ambrose A. Stevens informing his father that he had been appointed commander of Camp Morton in Indianapolis, Indiana to guard 2,3000 Confederate prisoners. He had joined the Union Army in 1861, first as a lieutenant colonel of the 3rd Michigan Volunteer Infantry and then as colonel of the 21st Michigan, until he was wounded at the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky on October 8, 1862. Stevens resigned due to disability on February 3, 1863, but when the Invalid Corps was created that year, he was commissioned as a major of the 5th Regiment in July, 1863. Stevens was finally promoted to colonel and took command of Camp Morton on October 22, 1863, a position he held until the wars end at the rank of brevet brigadier general. |
