Description: |
This three story tall with full basement building no longer exists. In the photograph the building makes an impression in its use of glass windows. On the left of the building at the rear on Chestnut Street are two two story houses abutting the Spieth building. Their two stories show that the ground and upper stories of the Spieth Building are each approximately two stories in height. On the Chestnut side there was a small commercial site at the back. The entrance had a door and two display windows covered by an awning. This may have been a tea room for the ladies or an ice cream parlor. Spieth had many ads for his ice cream and catering services in the local newspaper. Along the Spring Street side the ground floor is covered in glass display windows, that could be covered by awnings on the iron awning frame. In this shot the awnings are rolled up. In front stands various groups of customers or employees. One figure, dressed in white, may have been Mr. Spieth. The business started as a small restaurant, became known as premier caterers, and eventually opened this building to provide entertainment for the community. The second floor has large double wide windows on the front and more narrow windows on the side. The top used another technique in combining three narrow windows into one unit. One of these two floors served as a dance hall and large function space for weddings and other events. The other floor was an auditorium complete with an organ. Various groups would present plays and talent shows at the Spieth Building. |
