271. Lewman & Col. Wholesale Grocers, 1897

Description: This three story building with basement no longer exists in Jeffersonville. The building was brick with a solid carved stone facade. Just under the decorated roof edge is the name Lewman & Co. The upper story has 7 windows, all the same height, but of varying widths. The second floor has five windows, the center one arched with decorative columns and two windows on each side of equal height and width. The bottom or ground floor has a decorative border separating its style from the upper two floors. Here the four windows take up all the space, except for the recessed double door entrance. At either side on all three levels is a carved half column set into the stone. The right hand side of the store is visible and there is a slightly more ornate window at the front, with step leading up to it. With several little boys perched on the top step, it was probably designed as a candy window to keep the young ones out of the premises. There are a number of side entrances. There is quite a crowd gathered around the store with four people standing abreast in the entrance, one leaning on the telephone pole at the corner, several men standing at the side of the building near the little boys, a bicycle rider has paused in his journey and near the back are several delivery wagons with employees.
